Nicotine Replacement Therapies

Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRT) are a safe and effective way to quit smoking. NRT products can help smokers reduce withdrawal symptoms such as cravings, irritability, mood swings and anxiety. They work by replacing some of the nicotine normally obtained from cigarettes.

It is best to speak to a doctor, pharmacist or health professional to work out which product type may be best to use. Options are:

  • Nicotine gum

  • Nicotine patch

  • Nicotine inhalator

  • Nicotine lozenge

  • Nicotine oral spray

All these products can be purchased from a pharmacy without a script.

A discounted price to access nicotine patches can be obtained under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme from a doctor for a three month supply per year.

It is important to use NRT products properly and follow the instructions provided. This will ensure more chance of success with quitting.
